Brief Description

Brief Description: It is the wooden model of an elephant and is one of the fine examples of wood carvng of the Khasiis. It has been carved out of a single ppieces of wood. Salient features of the model is that the upper part of the tail has been executed withouut carving out the lower part. The base and posture is such that the creature is on the move with raised trunk in front of its head with two extended tusks by the side of the trunk. Body colour is marked by the original colour of the wood. The elephant (big) measures 14 & 1/4" inches from the tip of the tail to the end of the trunk. Its height is 8 & 3/4" inches (highest point) at the back in the centre of the body. Smaller one is the model of an elephant calf. Body colour is dark grrey. It measures 3" inches from hind leg to the tip of the trunk. It is a damaged piece with legs partly missing.

Brief Description: Constituent materials: Thatch dry leaf of reed; bamboo, cane, wood etc. Component parts: Roof, wall, platform, stair, backdoor etc. Description: It is the miniature model of a garo Bachelor's dormitory. The hut is erected on a wooden platform. The platform is supported by a number of wooden poles above the ground. The wooden beams on the platform supporting the roof are fitted with carved wooden figures. There are two stairs (wooden). One is decorated while the other is simple. The horizontal wooden beams which support the roof are also decorated with painting and wooden figures. The wall at the back side is also decorated with colours. The roof is two sloped made of dry leaves of a kind of reed. It is supported in between two bamboo structures - one above and another below. Along the central line of the roof at the top ther are a few structures with slender and weak bamboo structure used for decoration. Frontal part of the platform is open on all sides except at the top. But the back side is covered by plaited bamboo walls on three sides. At the back side wall , there is a door for going out.

Brief Description: Size: Maximum length-15 inches. Maximum breadth-4 inches. Maximum height-4 inches. Shape: It has an elongated body rectangular in shape. Componnt parts: Body and handle. Description: The specimen is a model. It is an elongated piece of wood and has been carved to give its shape. The wooden block is rectangular in cross-section. The upper side of the block has been dug out to make a deep depression almost all along its length and breadth more or less uniformly leaving approximately an inch or so along the four margins to serve as wall of the depressed area. The depth of the depressed area is around 3 inches. There is a small and slender wooden projection from the side wall (shorter & broader end) of the bod. It serves as handle for the convenience handling. This projection has been carved out of the mother piece and not an additional structure fitted from outside.

Brief Description: Size: Maximum length: 8 & 1/2 inches. Maximum breadth: 6 inches. Maximum height: 3 inches. Shape: It is a rectangular piece of wooden block. Constituent materials: Wood. Component parts: There is no separable additional parts. Description: The stool which is often used for sitting is made from a block of wood by way of carving. The sitting platform at the top is absolutely flat and rectangular in form. This platform is supported by two parallel supporting stands all along the elongated sides (one on each side). The other two sides which are shorter in length are open. The inner side of the stool between the supporting stands is hollow and open at both the ends.

Brief Description: The specimen is made of a stone like structure, wood, bamboo and cotton cord. It is broadly divided into 5 parts, such as circular stone like structure, a supporting wooden stick, triangular piece of wood, elongated cord and horizontally placed stick at the free end of the cord. Seed (Scandous entada): 1. Seed (Scandous entada) is flat, thick and circular in outline. It has a hole through and through at the centre. Its body colour is ash grey. 2. Supporting wooden stick: A slender wooden stick ( 5 inches in length and circular in outline) is passed through the hole of the stone like structure. Major part of the stick remains on the outer side. Only an inch or two remains on the other side of the circular structure. The stick at this end terminates into a point. The part of the stick which remains on the upper side measures 3 & 1/2 inches. 3. Cotton cord: Sufficiently strong twisted cotton cord of some length (16 inches) is tied with the supporting stick at the point where the stick meets the circular seed. The free end of the cord is next passed through a circular hole of a triangular shaped wooden pieces ( 5 inches in length). 4. Horizontal stick: Ultimately the free end of the cotton cord is tied to a small piece of wood in a horizontal position.
